Weaving and Waving : Forresters Lane Mural, Wellington : 2018
Weaving and Waving (Forresters Lane Mural)
Off Tory Street, near the corner of Courtenay Place is Forresters Lane. It is better recognised by the establishments located in this narrow laneway. The installation of this bold mural Weaving and Waving marks the beginning of the historic sites refreshed autonomy and identification.
Forresters Lane is located in an historic area of the CBD. Previously waves from the iconic Wellington Waterfront would have lapped much closer bringing with them people and supplies for the manufacturing plants in the area. The title Weaving and Waving alludes to the vitality that the picturesque harbour bestows. It also conjures up the way we traverse the city, with its small blocks and multitude of service ways one can weave through the city on their own unique path.
Wellington’s laneways are not unlike the snakes and ladders of city blocks. The image of the tubular shoot transports the viewer from one end of the lane to the other with a meandering journey along the way. It acts as an example of how to make the most of a compact city. Where the distance between two points is not far, it enables the pedestrian to take long-cuts and sight see, to enjoy the journey and take pleasure in discovering hidden gems, histories and communities.
